Media Theory Research

 In this post I am going to be looking at how media theories can be applied to music videos, by doing this I will be making  my initial decision of what theories should be applied to my music video.

Song 1 - Stan by Eminem

Narrative

Equilibrium - pregnant lady sleeping in her bed

Disruption - Crazy fan dying his hair to look like Eminem/ driving very fast into a broken bridge

recognition of disruption - Eminem gets the letters that Stan wrote him realises that he needs help

Attempt to repair - Eminem replies to Stan's letter

New Equilibrium - Stan dies because Eminem didn't write back to him in time and the cycle continues with Stan's little brother.

Use of low key lighting and dark almost sinister atmosphere signifies that Stan has devoted his whole life to Eminem and does not care about anyone or anything else. The creepy basement adds to the intense feels Stan has towards Eminem. The relationship between Stan and his girlfriend is almost abusive as Stan was extremely mad when she found his basement full of posters Eminem. Stan's violent outbursts suggests that he doesn't love his girlfriend he just wanted to have a child who is a similar age to Eminem's child but doesn't care about the consequences or the level of responsibility Stan needs to have in order to raise a child.


Song 2 - Wake me up when september ends by Green Day 

 Equilibrium - Starts off with young love. A couple are peacefully hanging out in a meadow and promise to stay with each other forever

Disruption - The boy joins the army

Recognition of disruption - The girl is angry at the boy for joining the army which tells the audience that she didn't want him to go

Attempt to repair - He pleads with her to understand why he did it and tries to convince her that he did it for her 

New Equilibrium - The boy goes to the army anyways and the girl is left by herself sitting in the same meadow while the boy's platoon is bombed at which insinuates that he died and left her behind. 


In the video i'll show narrative and the high level of emotion and the self control of the black women who are outcasted and abused. I will draw inspiration from the Green day music video by the way they showed the girl go through her emotions and end emotionless(almost like accepting her boyfriend's choice). 

5 stages of grief:

  • => denial
  • => anger
  • => bargaining
  • => depression
  • => acceptance

Media Institution
