Genre Research

In this post I am going to undertake research into the genre of my chosen brief.  The main reason for doing this is to highlight and analyse codes and conventions of a range of media texts in order to help me produce an effective media product of my own. The genre of the text as described in my chosen brief is narrative. My music video will be like a short story whilst flowing with the music and I'll be looking at the conventions of 3 media products that of the same genre.

One music video that I watch with a similar genre to mine is Rapman’s Shiro’s story. In the video the instead of singing the actors/actresses talk to help emphasise the emotions the characters are trying to portray as well as help the viewer understand what is going on in the video. Also the person singing that song appears in some scenes but is visible by the views not the actors and actresses in the actual video. The characters also act like that camera is not there which gives it the more realistic aspect. It also creates a non-scripted effect that helps the viewers connect more with the camera because it appears to be more like a documentary style music video. The music video I watched uses low key lighting to symbolise the serious parts of that relates with the serious mood. The video also uses high key light in scenes when Shiro (the main character) is with his child or in a good mood. The high key, colourful lighting suggest a more calm and happy atmosphere.

In conclusion, to create the narrative genre in my music video to be emphasised I will have short moments when you can hear the actor/ actresses voices and their conversations. The video would show the injustice in everyday life for black women and also portray the lack  of power.
